A 65-year-old man identified as Papa Elijah has been crushed to death by two trucks in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
The incident occurred at Aforezuna Junction on Tran-Saharan Highway, Abakaliki when two trucks competing for space on the ever-busy highway hit the victim and crushed him.
According to information gathered by Tribune Online from eyewitnesses, one of the trucks hit the deceased and he fell down and the other crushed him beyond recognition.
The eyewitness told Tribune Online that the driver of one of the trucks escaped when the incident occurred while the other stopped and reported himself to the police.
The source said, “Papa Elijah was crossing the other lane of the expressway to buy kerosene at a filling station located on the expressway. While the old man was crossing the road, two (911) trucks were at high speed competing for space. One of the trucks hit the man and he fell down. The other ran on him and crushed him.
“Immediately the incident happened, one of the drivers of the truck escaped through the flyover located on the road.
“The other driver had to stop and reported the accident to the police.
“Shortly, a team of policemen came to the scene and the man’s body was evacuated with zinc because it was crushed beyond recognition. The man was identified with only the clothes he was wearing when he left his house to buy kerosene.”
The eyewitness, who hails from the same Okposi community in Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state with the deceased, described him as a hard-working man despite his old age.
He said Papa Elijah used to make “otapiapia” which kills insects from which where he makes money to feed his family. It was the kerosene he uses to prepare the otapiapia that he went to buy at the filing station when he was crushed to death by the trucks.
Meanwhile, a team of policemen was seen at the scene where sympathisers were when Tribune Online visited. The policemen later took the driver who stopped and his truck to their station.
